Salt-water fishing

Deep-sea fishing is aplenty in the region. Many of the local reefs are only 30 minutes away where you can catch snapper, kingfish, hapuku or marlin. Popular islands for fishing include Tuhua (Mayor Island) and Motiti.

Brett Keller owns and operates the MV Manutere and is known to be the most trusted and helpful skipper in the Bay. Whether you are an accomplished fisher or never held a rod in your life, you'll enjoy a day out on the Manutere, with a skipper who does his very best to find the fish for you to catch. Never fished before? Great, we love to teach you how. It makes our day when we see people enjoying fishing for the first time and catching enough for dinner for the family.

The Manutere can take up to 20 fishers comfortably for a day trip. You will be bottom fishing for tarakihi, snapper and trevally etc. The maximum it will cost one person is $95 and that includes your rod, reel and all your bait for the day. You just bring your lunch and of course, something to put your fish in.

For an overnight experience join us on a midweek 24-hour trip. We leave Tauranga around 6pm so you get an evening/night fish, stay overnight, on board, somewhere around the picturesque Tuhua (Mayor) Island. We supply breakfast; you supply your sleeping gear, lunch and a cruisy attitude.

The sea is there to be respected and looked after. The environment on the water is just as important as any other environment nature provides us, and the groups we take diving and fishing must also have that respect.

An array of marine life is usually encountered on the way out to the fishing grounds. A wide variety of seabirds including shearwaters, petrels, gannets, cape pigeons and penguins. Dolphins are regularly encountered with sightings of orca and whales as an occasional bonus.

The Manutere can also be hired to take your group out to Tuhua or Motiti Island. Visit this unique island and explore the biggest pohutakawa forest in the world. It really will take your breath away.
